Hydrocephalus Hydrocephalus, also known as “ water on the brain, ” is a disorder that involves the buildup of fluid in the brain. Under normal circumstances, the brain reabsorbs CSF as fast as it is created. When a child has hydrocephalus, the brain is unable to absorb for CSF properly. This causes cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to build up and surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The liquid then widens the spaces in the brain and causes harmful pressure on the brain tissue. The most common way to treat hydrocephalus is through surgery. The procedure would require the pediatric neurosurgeon to implant a shunt, which is a flexible tube that is placed to redirect the liquid to another place in the body where it can be absorbed and not cause any risk to the brain . Craniofacial Surgery Craniofacial Surgery is a type of plastic surgery performed by pediatric neurosurgeons and pediatric plastic surgeons to help correct or reconstruct any congenital or developed malformations of the face, head, neck, jaw or skull. Congenital treatments are conditions that a patient is born with while developed malformations arise as a result of an accident or trauma . Pediatric Neurovascular Surgery As the Neuroscience Institute at Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center our team works collaboratively with the specialists at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to offer comprehensive care to pediatric patients with congenital and acquired vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord. Pediatric patients who require neurovascular surgery suffer from: Strokes Cavernous malformation Arterial venous malformations Moya-moya (abnormalities in the blood vessels) Our multidisciplinary team, including pediatric neurosurgeon, vascular neurosurgeons, pediatric intensivists, pediatric neurologists, pediatric emergency physicians, social workers, child life specialists, radiologists and rehab specialists work together to provides the full spectrum of care for patients suffering with neurovascular disease. We strive to provide each patient with a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan often utilizing conservative care when appropriate. Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery While traditional approaches to pediatric neurosurgery are inherently invasive, we are able to provide minimally invasive approach to surgery including endoscopic surgery. Minimally invasive pediatric neurosurgery uses small endoscopes (or tubes) to show parts of the brain, skull or spinal cord through small openings. The endoscopes act as small microscopes, making it easy for the surgeon to see the various critical or diseased areas that need to be repaired, removed, or replaced. By using endoscopes, it is much less invasive than conventional surgery that requires incision and the removal of the scalp, thus why endoscopic neurosurgery is also known as minimally invasive neurosurgery. Pediatric endoscopic neurosurgery does not require large incisions on the scalp or skull or extensive probing through brain tissue. Because of this, neurosurgeons are able to perform a less invasive procedure while maintaining a successful outcome. This results in a faster recovery time , a reduced risk of injury, shortened hospital stay, and less pain and scarring for our pediatric patients.
