If you need special accommodations with your course schedule or course load in order to take a technique or a repertory class, see the DANCE 280 overview or Repertory Contract option. Technique Courses African and Dances of the African Diaspora Our curriculum focuses on the physical study of African and African Diaspora cultural practices. Rigorous technical training in dance and music forms, as well as in-depth research and performance opportunities, contribute to the development of highly skilled performing artists in African and African influenced dance forms. Ballet Featuring renowned faculty with extensive backgrounds at the highest level of the professional ballet field, Duke has become one of the "go-to" places for a strong ballet curriculum. Ballet technique courses bring current and traditional approaches to classical training that seek to extend its range of possibilities. Ballet repertory courses emphasize new and experimental choreography based in the classical/neo-classical tradition, and provide the opportunity for students to develop as performers/interpreters through the rehearsal/performance process. Modern Dance Drawing from classical to contemporary modern styles/traditions, Modern Technique courses at Duke open students to the range of movement possibilities while also demanding specificity. Classes are structured to develop rhythmic clarity, spatial awareness, endurance, and a qualitative use of energy and physicality. Building a strong foundation through anatomically-sound training principles, Modern specialists Andrea E. Woods, Keval Khalsa and Barbara Dickinson challenge students to discover their utmost potential as articulate, expressive movers. Jazz Highly technical, yet full of candid natural movement - challenging, exciting, passionate, sexy, tough, beautiful, smooth, and clear.
