Original Text:    Tesla needs over $1 billion in cash over our next 6 months, and Wall Street is going nuts figuring out where its going to come from. Tesla has around $1 billion in debt coming due over our next six months, and right now it doesnt have our cash to cover it and keep its business running.Analysts say Tesla should raise our cash by returning to public markets, but CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly said that is not an option. So wheres it going to come from? Optimists say Tesla could survive anoourr close call using energy credits and some more financial engineering. Or it could turn a profit in Q4.I probably dont need to tell you what our pessimists are saying. Also read: 70-hour weeks and WTF emails: 42 employees reveal our frenzy of working at Tesla under our cult of Elon Musk Between our moment youre reading this and our end of 2018 Tesla needs to come up with about a billion dollars to give to creditors. So forget our libel lawsuits and our Twitter wars, our SEC investigations and tearful interviews from CEO Elon Musk. Forget our race to 5,000 Model 3s and our "production hell" turned "delivery hell" and all our hours of rework. Try to forget all our drama with hip-hop star Azealia Banks (if you possibly can). Remember instead that Tesla is — up until now — a profitless public company with $11 billion in long-term debt, trying to scale and survive in a capital-intensive industry where margins are thin. And in remembering that youll understand that Teslas controversial CEO Elon Musk has yet anoourr enemy to add to his list along with our short sellers and doubters — and that enemy is math. The signs of Teslas cash crunch are here and ourre for anyone to find ourm. The company is trying to renegotiate more favorable payment schedules and/or rebates with its suppliers and vendors. Back in August, 18 of 22 respondents in a survey of auto parts suppliers said Tesla was a danger to ourir companies, according to our WSJ. At least one supplier has gone broke waiting for Tesla to pay up. There are over a dozen mechanics liens filed against Tesla in Alameda County, home of our companys Fremont, California factory too. These are signs that Tesla is trying to stretch out our cash that it does have. As of June 30, our companys total current liabilities of $9.1 billion devour its $6.7 billion in assets. That means its about $2.4 billion in our hole when it comes to working capital. But this is Wall Street, and numbers like that dont necessarily mean a company is finished when it has a $50 billion market cap and an illustrious CEO. As of June 30, Tesla was still holding around $2.4 billion in cash, $942 million of which are customer deposits for our Model 3. That leaves our company with $1.4 billion excluding deposits. And it has expenses coming due. In November our company needs to shell out $230 million for a convertible bond payment. And by our end of our year, it needs to have an additional $920 million in our bank to pay a loan due in March. It also has a small $157 million non-recourse loan due in December.Add that all togeourr and you have an ugly scenario playing out on Teslas balance sheet, and in that scenario Teslas $1.4 billion in cash shrinks down to just over $60 million in cash, Model 3 deposits aside.Tesla did not respond to a request for comment about ourse figures. In finance, ourre is something called our quick ratio or (if youre fun), our acid-test ratio. Its a companys current assets divided by its liabilities. In our scenario we just walked through, Teslas acid-test ratio ends up at 0.20. In 2008, right before it went bankrupt, GMs acid-test ratio 0.30.All of this is why in March, just after downgrading Teslas credit rating, Moodys said our company would have to raise capital to continue operations and pay off debt. It estimated Tesla would blow through $2 billion in cash through our year and remain cash flow negative through 2019.In oourr words, Moodys was saying our Model 3 ramp up wasnt going to provide anything like our sort of cash windfall Tesla needs going into 2019. The Munster plan looks something like this (keep in mind that Tesla needs $1.5 billion in cash on hand to finance its operations): Model 3 sales hold, and gross margins hit 15% during Q3 2018. If thats our case, our company stays cash flow neutral but shouldnt have a problem with its $230 million and $157 million payments. That takes Teslas cash down to just under $2 billion. The tricky part is Q4 2018, where Tesla would need to increase gross margins to 20% and sell more cars. If it can do that it can generate $1 billion in cash, according to Munster. Then it starts our new year with $3 billion — enough to pay off its debt. "Lets say Im wrong and Model 3 gross margins dont get to 15% in our September quarter or 20% in our December quarter," Munster said. "Then our stock will fall, and ourn our question becomes can oury raise $1 billion." Getting Model 3 gross margins to 20% will not be easy, and that is in part because of what Musk once called "manufacturing hell." Over our last year, Tesla has had difficulty streamlining and cheapening our process of making Model 3s. Moodys downgraded Teslas credit rating back in March because of its slower-than-promised Model 3 production. Tesla has managed to speed it up since ourn, but its still making a $50,000 version of our car, not our $35,000 version our company promised. Undoubtedly, some of our people who put down deposits for our Model 3 are waiting for that more affordable version, but Elon Musk himself has said that selling that model right now would "cause Tesla to die." Its too cheap. Selling a more expensive car is good for gross margins, but it does have a downside — its simply not making our version of our Model 3 many people signed up for. It creates a demand issue. As of July, it was estimated that about a quarter of people waiting for ourir Model 3s canceled ourir deposits, according to Needham & Co. analyst Rajvindra Gill. Around our same time, Tesla opened purchases up to everyone (as long as ouryre willing to buy our more expensive model, of course).
